The women’s club lacrosse team at Radford University will be losing four of their strongest players this coming graduation. Seniors Britney Nielsen, Caitlin McCarron and Marie Triolo and graduate student Danielle Brown will be leaving RU in May.
“These four girls were truly role models and mentors for our team,” said junior club vice president Astin Altenburg. “I’m going to miss my best friends.”
These four players brought different positive attributes to the team. Nielsen played goalie in past years on the club and this year switched to defense and midfield. Bringing a positive attitude to the field, Nielsen helped the club keep up their morale at any given time.
“She has always played with a smile and never had anything bad to say about anyone,” said club president Alyssa Tompkins
McCarron played defense for the club team, becoming an emerging leader for the club by helping new members learn throughout the season. Triolo was the club treasurer and played midfield. She has been a strong leader to the club team throughout her time playing.
Brown founded the club and has been a big leader of the club ever since. Many of the players said she “loves the team so much and would do anything for them.” She has been a key member of the team for the past six years.
“Dani loves the club so much and tries her hardest to do things as a whole,” Tompkins said.
Losing team members is never easy, but the team is focusing on the positive memories these four members will leave behind.
“It’s been a truly great experience being in a college club sports team,” Altenberg said. “These are the times I will never forget because these seniors were leaders who were so great.”
The club team’s last game of the season, which was scheduled for Sunday, April 17, never went underway due to a cancellation from VCU. It is without a doubt that all four members have made great contributions to the club and they will be missed by their teammates.
