The role of a Copy Editor

Feel free to let us know if you have any questions. All of our contact information is back on the Contact/Jobs page. – EIC

  • As the Copy Editor, they will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) and Managing Editor on layout, design, optimization, and of course, making sure that every article is accurate and error free.
  • There are weekly Monday meetings from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. which are mandatory for the Copy Editor to attend for ideas, comments, assignments and tons of other information.
  • The copy editor will edit the Section Editor’s articles, which they should have already edited on WordPress as a “Saved Draft” and (on macs) using InDesign; the EIC, Managing Editor and Section Editors will teach the Copy Editor how to do all of that.
  • The Copy Editor also checks/writes headlines, subheads and captions for articles.
  • Reads and thoroughly edits all copy including captions and headlines, grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and accuracy of names and identifications.
  • They also double check that names, places, and organizations are spelled properly and that facts, dates and statistics are accurate. This may involve contacting Staff Writers’ sources and conducting online research.
  • The Copy Editor must keep in contact with the EIC, Managing Editor, and the Section Editors on a weekly basis (We use the Slack app).
  • The Copy Editor can choose to write an article for that week’s paper, but it must be at least 500 words or longer and turned in on Saturday night by 11:59 p.m. unless said otherwise. Another editor must edit their work.
  • The Copy Editor can “publish” work on but first needs the approval of the EIC unless stated otherwise.
  • They have the ability to fire and give out warnings within reasoning to Section Editors and Staff Writers but first, consult the EIC about the issue.
  • The Copy Editor is encouraged to take pictures at events either with their phones or the cameras that Highlander Student Media can rent out to them.
    • Talk to the EIC 24 hours before the event to file the correct information on time.
  • The Copy Editor will be asked to use social media and to help with events on campus to promote the Tartan and must follow through with said request.
  • The Copy Editor might be requested to deliver the weekly newspaper on Wednesdays at 4:15 PM as well.
  • The EIC has the right to change, take away, or alter any of the duties mentioned above.
