The Highlanders softball team headed to the Cougar Classic hosted by College of Charleston this past weekend. They started the tournament off right with an 8-1 victory over UMass-Lowell Friday. Senior third baseman Whitney Davis started things off with a two run home run in the second inning, giving them the lead for good.

Junior pitcher Abby Morrow allowed just four hits over five innings while the defense was errorless. After a five hit inning in the third, the Highlanders had a secure lead of 7-1. Radford capped their scoring in the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Marissa Gagliano hit a single, bringing home junior first baseman Kayla Bishton who had reached base earlier.

Freshmen pitcher Kayla Huffman pitched the last two innings of the game for Radford, securing the win by striking out three, walking three, and not giving up a hit.

Radford played UMass-Lowell again on Saturday, and beat them again 5-4.  Summer Robinson hit her first home run of the season to tie the game 4-4 in the fifth inning, followed by an RBI double by Hannah Medlam which sent Nia Chiles home for the game winning run.

In the second game on Saturday, Morrow suffered her first loss against host College of Charleston, giving up five hits in three innings. Becky Mantel provided the Highlanders lone run, hitting her second home run of the season in the sixth inning. Mantel is now tied for seventh in the programs history for home runs with 25. While five different Highlanders recorded a hit in Saturday’s game, College of Charleston’s Valerie Cassel hit a three run homer in the first inning and the Cougars never looked back, defeating Radford 6-1.

In the first game Sunday, the Highlanders fell to fell to Detroit 2-0. A pair of errors helped Detroit jump out to a 1-0 lead late in the fourth. A pair of singles and a stolen base in the seventh inning gave Detroit their other run for the game, despite Radford outhitting Detroit 5-4.

In the last game of the tournament the Highlanders defeated South Carolina State 15-2. Marissa Yow went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Alex Lang had two hits and a two run home run. Gagliano, Medlam, and Robinson each tripled and each had two hits, while freshman Lizzy Humes recorded her first career homer. Lauren McIntyre pitched all five innings while allowing only five hits, two strikeouts, and no walks.

The Highlanders return to action this Wednesday in Blacksburg against crosstown rival Virginia Tech.
