The theme at Radford University this semester seems to be all about recycling — from trash to plastics to paper and now even dresses. This spring, RU’s Student Government Association will be sponsoring a dress drive for the local Pulaski County High School.

With two upcoming formal dress events here at RU, girls have an opportunity to donate their dresses to a high school girl in need of a pretty prom dress to make her night special.

Noella Kim, SGA’s Diversity Coordinator, proposed the idea of hosting the dress drive and has been working diligently to put the drive into place. Michelle Jessie, a teacher at Pulaski County High School and head of the prom committee was very excited to speak about the upcoming dress drive.

“I’m very pleased to know the students at Radford thought of the idea to donate dresses to the girls, and  with prom rapidly approaching on May 3, many girls don’t have the access to funds to afford the dress of their dreams,” said Jessie.

“I hope that with the donations from the drive we can get enough dresses that these very deserving girls find a dress that will make their dreams come true,” she added.

A few of RU’s own students, including sophomore Ariel Cooper, were interested in the dress drive and spoke on what they thought of it.

“Though I won’t be attending any of the upcoming events, I do believe that it is a really good idea to have a dress drive,” said Cooper. “I have two prom dresses that I will probably never wear again so I may donate them to the dress drive just because I hope I can make an impact on a girl’s life.”

“Oftentimes girls hold on to their prom dresses for the memories but forget that a dress they’ve only worn once and may never wear again could go to such a good cause like the dress drive,” said senior, Zach McConnell.

The start of spring brings several events happening on campus that require formal attire. The first event will be the Masquerade Ball, which will be March 20 in the Muse Banquet Hall. Students can dress up in their classical theater best accompanied with masks for a night of fun and mystery.

There will be a Ring Dance held in the Muse Banquet Hall on March 22 for juniors and seniors. This event is sponsored by the SGA, which will be the main event that RU students can donate their dresses to the dress drive.
