While most Radford University students were at home enjoying a nice, long winter break, the RU men’s basketball team was still on campus continuing to try and win the important Big South conference games. The Highlanders stayed busy as they played 11 games during the break with a record of 7-4. The Highlanders now stand at an overall record of 13-8 and a conference record of 3-3, and with 10 games to go the team looks to be in a great position to make a run.
RU played some opponents during this stretch of the season and they lost to the tough University of Nevada Las Vegas squad but came away with a huge victory over Florida Gulf Coast who gained national spotlight last year for their run in the NCAA tournament. RU also took down Big South foes Liberty, Longwood and High Point.
The team is continuing to put points on the board as they are averaging 76.1 per game while their opponent is average 71.0 per game. RU is shooting an average of 46 percent per game and also averaging 34 percent from behind the three-point line. Junior guard Javonte Green continues to lead the team in scoring as he is averaging 16.1 points per game. Green also leads the team in field goal percentage, rebounds, free throw percentage, and steals. Fellow junior guard R.J. Price who is averaging 12.9 points follows closely behind Green. Sophomore guard Ya Ya Anderson currently leads the team in three-point shooting, as Anderson is shooting 42 percent from long range.
Things will not get any easier for the Highlanders as they are only about halfway through their conference schedule and will need to fare well in the upcoming games if they hope to keep their conference championship dreams alive.
