Radford came into the season looking to start off on the right foot against Georgia Southwestern; who already beat a division 1 team in Troy this year. Highlanders started sluggishly in the first half and found themselves trailing at the half 32-30.

Highlanders started the second half strong. After pulling down an offensive board, senior center Randy Phillips tied the game at 32 just 40 seconds into the second stanza. Sophomore guard Donald Hicks then knocked down a three to make it 35-32 second later. It started a 21-6 run that builds a 51-38 lead midway through the second half. Radford kept the lead for the rest of the game, to win their season opener 72-63.

Jones leads the Highlanders in scoring in his first collegiate game with 15 points off the bench. Ed Polite and Randy Phillips dominated the backboards for the Highlanders, who had a team total of 45 rebounds and the Highlander outrebounded GSW by 17. Polite with a double-double, with 12 points and 11 rebounds; Phillips finished with a near double-double, with eight points and nine rebounds. Radford bench outscored GSW 31-24. GSW top scorers were led by Watson and Mason who both had 14 points each; Sessions added 12 points.

I interviewed redshirt Freshman Carlik Jones and asked him a few questions. First things first I asked him “How did you feel about your first collegiate game?” He stated, “It feels pretty good that it’s over, at first I was nervous, but once I settled down, the game became much easier to me.” The second question I asked him was about the shot. He said, “I thought the ball had hit the rim, but my teammates told me to shoot it, and I did, and it banked in.” The last question I asked him was, “How did your team do as a whole?” He said, “We had a slow start, but we finished strong and got the win.”

Up Next is Ohio State awaits Radford in Columbus, Ohio where the two sides will meet on Sunday, November 12th at 2:30 p.m. The Buckeyes are 1-0 as well after earning a 94-65 victory over Robert Morris on Friday night.
