Liberty Kickoff: Indoor Track struggles at season opening meet

The Radford indoor track team started the season off on the right foot on Dec. 1 at the Liberty Kickoff. Junior hurdler Courtni Pannell led the women’s field in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.72. The win marks the third title in the event in the past two seasons. The time is also the third best mark in program history.

Junior distance runner Chris Weeks led the men with a win in the one-mile with a time of 4:32.29, over five seconds faster than the second place finisher. Freshmen Daniel Moniak and Harrison Murn were also in the top five in the event giving the Highs three out of the top five runners.

Freshman sprinter/jumper Lora Wilson grabbed the win for Radford in the 200m dash with a mark of 26.94 to place 17th and junior sprinter Lakei Crews finished seventh in the women’s 60m dash with a time of 7.85.

For the men, senior Kaise White grabbed a fifth place finish in the 200m with a time of 23.16. In the 400m, Radford had three sprinters finish in the top 20; junior David Green posted a time of 52.05, senior Eric Graves with a time of 52.61 and sophomore Jake Zimmerman finished in 53.06.

For the field portion, senior Jessica Barron tied for fifth in the high jump while freshman Devon Drake tied for 13th for the men in the high jump. Sophomore Jamiecka Baker earned fifth place in the triple jump while junior Kaleice Green and Wilson finished third and fourth in the long jump.

Sophomore Jazmine Banks threw for a 12.79 mark for a third place finish and senior Curtis Hodge was runner up in the weight throw with a 17.21 mark.

The Liberty Kickoff capped the last meet for the 2012 school year. Radford has a long break before returning to action when they will travel to Virginia Tech for the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 18-19.
