Redskin’s RGIII and Panther’s Cam Newton faced off in the college gone professional star quarterback event of the season.

Rookie Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is constantly compared to other NFL quarterbacks, most often to second-year Carolina Panthers quarterback Cameron Newton.

On Sunday, RG3 faced off against Newton, the winner of the Rookie of the Year award last season.

The Panthers were victorious 21-13, as they shut down the Washington Redskins fourth quarter comeback.

Both quarterbacks didn’t play to their full ability during their head-to-head matchup.

Newton was 13/23 passing with 201 yards and a touchdown. Griffin III was 23/39 with 215 yards.

RG3 and Newton are constantly compared to each other because critics and analysts believe that they have similar playing styles, when in reality, their styles are quite different.

Newton stands at 6’5” and weighs 245 pounds. Griffin III is 6’2” and 217 pounds.

RG3 ran a 4.41 40-yard dash time, which is the fastest of all the quarterbacks at the NFL combine.

Newton ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.59 at his NFL combine in 2011.

Throughout the first half of the season, Griffin has 1,993 yards, eight touchdowns, and a 93.9 passer rating. Newton has 1,902 yards, six touchdowns, and a 77.7 passer rating.

Griffin told the media, “It’s something that the media’s definitely going to play into with both of us being similar-style quarterback with different qualities to each other, but it’s not my job to try to compare us, I’ll let you guys continue to do that.”

“It’s like I tell people many, many times: I won’t be playing him, I’ll be playing his defense,” said Griffin. “So, have fun with the comparisons. We do run similar schemes. There’s a lot of similarities. But, I’d rather be compared to Aaron Rodgers, or a guy like that: someone who’s won Super Bowls.”

Rodgers, the 2011 NFL MVP, has a much more similar stature and playing style to RG3 than Newton does.

Rodgers is 6’2”, 225 pounds. Although his 40-yard dash time is much slower than RG3 (4.71), he is still agile and versatile for a quarterback with such incredible arm strength and accuracy.

RG3 has also been compared to Eagles veteran quarterback Michael Vick.

However, Vick, the 6’0”, 215 pound speedster, has more dissimilarities to Griffin III than similarities.

New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle told the media, “…They’re two totally different quarterbacks and I think that their game as far as their offensive approach is extremely different.RG3, as you know, he can run the ball. I think he runs the ball a lot more than Michael Vick. I mean, he’s a fast guy. He has a very, very strong arm and I think he’s an all-around quarterback and he’s going to get better with time.”

Griffin III has only played in nine games in his NFL career, so comparisons to any professional quarterback are premature and unnecessary.

Throughout his first nine games, however, he’s proven that he’s a breed of his own. He mixes patience and pocket presence with agility and a fantastic scrambling ability.

He’s also shown his maturity in the fourth quarter and skill to read defensive schemes.

Griffin III will have to deal with comparison and criticism for his entire career, just as every professional athlete will.

He lets his game do the talking and will, over time, prove that he’s a quarterback in a league of his own.
