Is Netflix controlling your life?

By Chris Carter

If there’s one thing that makes us Radford students unproductive when we need to get schoolwork done, it’s Netflix. Well, maybe there’s more than one thing. But Netflix is one of the obstacles that stands in our way when we need to buckle down and get schoolwork done. Instead of doing that assignment, or studying for that exam, we choose to “binge watch” our favorite TV shows. We just can’t help it. Having entire seasons of fascinating shows at our fingertips lures us to stay glued to our televisions for hours on end.

As college students, we are experienced in pulling all-nighters to cram for tests. Sometimes we stay up all night so we can finish a season of our latest Netflix addiction. Have you ever watched an entire season in one sitting? You’re not the only one.

Below is a list of three shows that will have you hooked from the very first episode.

#3: Scandal

Scandal has captivated viewers with their drama-filled plot that centers around the life of Olivia Pope, a professional crisis manager who used to be a media relations consultant for the President of the United States. Olivia helps protect the public images of the nation’s most prominent people. Her and her staff are the best at fixing other people’s problems, but they can’t seem to fix their own. No matter how hard she tries to escape her past, which involved a romantic relationship with the President, she cannot resist temptation. You may not be able to resist the temptation of binge-watching the thrilling series once you start seeing the drama unfold.

#2: The Walking Dead

A former Sheriff awakes from a coma to discover that the world has been taken over by zombies. He heads out to Atlanta on a search for his family, barely escaping death at the hands of the zombies along the way. He finds survivors (non-zombies) and they set out to search for a safe and secure place to live. They are under constant attack from flesh eating zombies, and will do anything to survive — even if that means turning on each other.

#1: Breaking Bad

When a chemistry teacher is diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer and has only two years to live, he decides to “break bad.” Determined to make sure his family will be financially stable after he passes, Walter White creates a drug empire using his chemistry background. He begins cooking up the finest crystal meth around, but needs help selling it. So he turns to a former student of his, Jesse Pinkman, to help him sell the meth. Business booms quickly, making them rich in just a matter of months. This newfound success attracts the attention of the DEA, and Walt and Jesse turn into dangerous criminals. Make sure you have plenty of free time before you start watching. This thriller will have you glued to the TV, clicking that annoying message, “Yes I am still watching,” every three hours until you finish the season.
