With the nice warm weather coming to an end in the next couple of weeks, we should take advantage of it now. There are many things to do outside around Radford University and around the city of Radford itself. A main attraction of Radford is the many activities that the New River Valley offers. You can partake in tubing, fishing, kayaking, and relaxing next to the river.

As well as the river, Radford offers other outdoor activities to do. There are many beautiful parks to walk around all just a few miles from the university. If you’re willing to drive a little bit, you can participate in hikes up the mountains to see incredible views and some incredibly high points over the valley. While you are up on the mountain, you can also enjoy horseback riding from local stables. For some more fun activities for people who do not enjoy the hike, there are options such as mini golf not far from the town, at Cox’s. Each whole of mini golf offers a discount to many local businesses if you golf a whole in one. As well as the mini golf, they offer a driving range and batting cages.

However, if you prefer to stay on campus for some fun activities, Radford has many nice spots and offers a lot of extra outdoor activities. Many people play sports with their friends on one of the many quads, as well as picnic on each quad. It’s a great place to get some fresh air and hang out with friends. RU Outdoors also offers great outdoor activities at any time of the day and week, such as yoga, hikes, caving, and rock climbing. There are also club sports offered by the University to get outside in the nice weather, and do something fun with a bunch of people. R-SPaCE also offers activities around campus during the day like DIY projects.

With school just starting back up, so are sporting events. A great way to get involved in attending those are to join the Radford Rowdies. They host outdoor events such as tailgates, giveaways, and being the hype crowd at Radford events. Currently in season is men and women’s soccer, men and women’s golf, men and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. There are opportunities to go to games almost every day if that’s what you enjoy doing. If you are not on the team, go out and support the teams.

Radford hosted the volunteer fair this past week. If you went, you know there were many service projects offered. That’s a great way to be outdoors while also helping the community become better. There were opportunities for things like clean ups at the river, at Shenandoah and many of the surrounding parks. These events are offered on a daily basis and can be participate in whenever you have time.

All in all, Radford University and the New River Valley both offer many activities and community events that you can get involved in. It is a great way to take advantage of the last couple weeks of beautiful weather.
