Steve Helm, Dean of Radford University’s McConnell Library, unexpectedly left his position on March 1, about halfway through the spring semester.

Helm, who had been a staff member at the university for over two decades, was appointed as the Dean of McConnell in September of 2011.

His departure came as a surprise to many students and staff members who worked with him, most unsure about what exactly led to Helm’s leaving.

“We had a few conversations,” said library-aid Juston Carter. “I was surprised to hear that he was fired considering he was a pretty cool and established guy.”

Much of the confusion among library attendees stems from the belief that Helm didn’t finish the duration of his contract.

According to Caitlyn Scaggs, Associate Vice President for University Relations, contracts for administrative and professional faculty are issued annually and typically go June 25 through June 24 of the following year.

McConnell Library released no message or statement following the Dean’s exit.

However, the university did appoint Dr. Ben Caldwell, current Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research, as Interim Dean of McConnell Library.

Radford University had no comment on Helm’s departure.
