The College of Humanities & Behavioral Sciences (CBHS) Writing Center, located in CBHS 4800, offers tutoring sessions to all students who need help with their writing.
The center is open Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Students can schedule an appointment through a Writing Center account and reserve a time slot and tutor. Tutoring appointments begin on the hour and last 45 minutes.
According to the writing centers website, their tutors will work with the student on “all phases of a writing project from brainstorming to revising.” They also “envision the tutoring session as a conversation about your paper.” They will “provide feedback, share tips, and strategies, and help you make a plan for further developing or revising your project.”
A face-to-face session will consist of reviewing and reading an assignment aloud. Also, the tutors ask that goals are set before the meeting. The tutor will give feedback on the work and provide strategies for more successful writing. By the end of the session, the student should leave with a plan for finalizing their work.“the Writing Center is not an editing or proofreading service. We work with you to improve your own proofreading and editing skills, but we don’t simply point out problems or rewrite them for you.”
Dr. Katie Garahan and Justine Jackson of the English Department are the director and assistant director of the Writing Center respectively.
The Writing Center would like students to know, “Please remember that the Writing Center is not an editing or proofreading service. We work with you to improve your own proofreading and editing skills, but we don’t simply point out problems or rewrite them for you. We want to help you learn to become your own best proofreader and editor.”
The Writing Center opened on Sept. 25, 2017, and has been helping students with their writing since.
The Writing Center can be reached at 540-831-7605 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Its hours are Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
