The Highlanders Baseball squad began the 2019 season dropping three games to East Carolina, but with the help of redshirt-senior outfielder Andrew Szamski and freshman infielder David Bryant, they were able to bounce back with a two-game sweep over Bucknell University.
Szamski was awarded Big South Player of the Week, and Bryant achieved his first Big South Honors as Freshman Player of the Week. Their contributions for both neutral site victories led to a 9-1 victory on Saturday, Feb. 24 and a 17-4 victory the following Sunday.
In the first match-up against Bucknell, Szamski tallied three hits from four at-bats and an RBI. He also scored the third run of the afternoon.
The work of both Szamski and Bryant helped the Highlanders go 2-1 for one on the weekend which was a complete turn around since the beginning of the season.In Sunday’s afternoon game, Szamski hit a pair of two-run homers and scored three times to aid the Highlanders to win in seven innings. He leads the team with three long ball hits and seven RBIs this season already. Szamski finished the weekend against Bucknell going 5-for-7 from the plate.
Bryant’s performances in both Bucknell games were equally impressive as he was able to bring in the final blow in the first game, hitting a single up the middle to bring his teammate Colby Higgerson to home plate. In the second game, he hit 2-for-3 from the plate followed by an RBI and scored a pair of runs.
The Highlanders played the third game over the weekend following the second Bucknell game against Wofford. Szamski and Bryant both played an important role in the match-up. Unfortunately, they fell to the Terriers in a slightly contested bout 10-9.
Bryant hit his first career home run in the sixth inning. Bryant utilized Szamski’s sacrifice right field fly to tally a run for himself and an RBI for Szamski.
Szamski finished the weekend series going 6-for-10 for the weekend with six RBIs and six runs. He posted the highest on-base percentage of anyone in the Big South at .677. Bryant tallied a run in all three games and had .615 on-base percentage with four hits and four walks.

Radford Baseball also played a tightly contested game against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg ending the game 7-8. Szamski also went 1-for-2 and had another RBI to add to his impressive streak.
This is the first time Bryant has been award Big South Weekly honors and the second time for the Maryland native after receiving the award February 19 of last season after going 8-for-13 with six RBIs and five runs against North Florida.
The Highlanders will play their first home game against the College of William and Mary on Wednesday, Mar. 6 following a three-game series against the UAB this past weekend. This first home game marks a seven-game homestand competing in two separate series against Harvard and UMass Lowell.
