COMS Week 2018 is coming up, and there are a lot of fun things planned for not only Communications majors, but also for all other majors.
This is a week dedicated to engaging students and community through career-centered workshops, informative speeches from professionals in the field, and philanthropic fundraising.
This year, the theme for COMS Week is COMLYMPICS, and it is kicking off April 9 10:30 a.m., but the fun starts before then.
On March 22, the students planning COMS Week held a bake sale outside of Quickway from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
There was also another fundraiser at Moe’s on March 27 from 5-8 p.m.
All of the money raised from fundraisers goes to Bobcat Backpacks, which according to their Facebook page has a mission to, “…meet the needs of hungry children in our community over the weekends during the academic school year and throughout the summer.”
So what exactly will be going on the week of COMS Week? Well, besides the wide variety of speakers in fields like journalism, production, public relations, broadcast journalism and more, there are also a lot of other events planned.
On Monday, April 9, there is a 3×3 basketball tournament going on in the MAC Courts from 7-10 p.m. To register, each team either has to pay $15 or bring 15 canned goods. The winning team gets a $100 gift card to Sharkey’s
Also on Monday, learn more about Highlander Student Media which will be having its panel in the Bonnie Auditorium from 3-3:50 p.m.
Delegate Chris Hurst is the keynote speaker, and he will share his transition from journalism to politics on Tuesday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m. in Bondurant Auditorium. Some other things that are planned for COMS Week is a brainstorming workshop, sports-themed smackdown, alumni panel, professional headshot session, and a strategic communication graduate panel.
Some may remember COMS Week ending with a carnival, but this year it is slightly different. There will still be a Carnival with free food, games, prizes, and music. However, Lambda Pi Eta, Public Relations Student Society of America, and RadAd have come together to create a Campaign-A-Thon. This will be happening on April 12 in the MAC Courts from 4-9 p.m. (the Campaign-A-Thon starts at 4 p.m., and the Carnival starts at 5 p.m.).
So what exactly is a Campaign-A-Thon?
Six teams will apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to create campaigns in a marathon-like fashion for a local business or nonprofit. All teams will be entered to win prizes which include gift cards and an HP laptop. The winning team will be announced and receive recognition and RU Swag at Friday’s award ceremony. All participants will end the competition with something to add to their resume and will be given certificates for their participation.
These are just some of the activities planned for COMS Week, they all can’t be revealed now! To stay up to date with all things COMS Week, make sure to follow @ComsWeekRadford on all social media platforms!
