RU alumnus starts sunglasses company
There is a constant desire for the latest styles, fresh new fashions, as well as everything on the “new arrival” section of your favorite brand’s website. It happens to college students everywhere. But alas, we are college students who are on an extremely tight budget and attaining the trendiest looks and highest quality styles are not in our economical agendas. In most cases, we typically spend the most amount of money on the smallest of things. Whether it be a handbag, a watch or a pair of sunglasses, these are items that will never go out of style but can be costly when you want the best look in town.
RU alumnus Dylan Roukous started his own line of affordable sunglasses and has helped students look good, without having to spend an ungodly amount of money. His line of shades, Nectar Sunglasses, was established to supply people with excellent quality sunglasses at an affordable cost. These sunglasses are a great alternative to some casual brand sunglass styles like Oakley Frogskins or even Ray Ban Wayfarers.
While still attending RU, Roukous sought after any establishment he saw a profit in. At first, he became the co-owner of the Cart, which was a food service on wheels located next to the Central Mini Mart, which is now known as Quick Way. Open from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m., the cart sold fast food items like hot dogs, Philly cheese steaks, and funnel cake. Although it was a fun atmosphere and vibe, Roukous says that we will never get into the food business again.
After his experience with the Cart, Roukous designed and sold the popular RU Quadfest themed wayfarers. Without knowing what the turnout of the sunglass sales would be, Roukous took a risk and placed an order for a large amount of Quadfest themed shades. After only three days, he sold out of the sunglasses. The RU Quadfest themed sunglasses turned out to be a huge success. Roukous became aware of the demand for affordable pairs of shades from the college community and began to look deeper into the market.
Upon graduating from RU, Roukous created Nectar Sunglasses. Production started September 2011 and Roukous officially launched the company on February 8, 2012.
“Sunglasses are always trending, [they’re] always in style, they make you look good,” said Roukous.
Nectar allows customers to personalize and customize their own pair of sunspecs for only $25. If you don’t feel like customizing your own, Nectar offers a list of 42 different colored shades for an even lower price of $13.
With the opportunity to sponsor NASCAR drivers, Duane Stepp Jr. and Ryan Blaney, Nectar Sunglasses is definitely making its way into the limelight by attracting public interest. Nectar is currently sponsoring and supporting a few rap artists, rock bands, skateboarders, surfers and skim boarders. They plan to continue to support anyone that pushes the limit and goes for it. Their website has had hits from every state in the nation and has customers from over 15 countries. With their slogan, “Enjoy Life,” Nectar continues to receive tons of support and continues to excel as a newly launched company.
Nectar Sunglasses was started by a college student looking to become an entrepreneur and offer an affordable style to fellow peers. Roukous said that a lot of his success in business is due to the help and support from the RU community and especially, his former RU professors. He would like to give his thanks to Dr. Lollar, Dr. Dale Henderson, Dr. Schirr, Dr. Thakkar and Dr. Henderson for all of their support and help.
As a young entrepeneur himself, Roukous offers advice to students looking to start their own businesses.
“If not now, when?” said Roukous. “Write down what you want, the steps that it takes to get there and look at it everyday. Cross each step off as you do it and all of a sudden your dream turns to a reality.”
