150th birthday celebration to honor Dr. McConnell

McConnell Library is hosting the 150th birthday celebration of Dr. John Preston McConnell, Radford University’s founding president.

Dr. McConnell served as Radford’s president from 1911 to 1937 after serving nine years as professor of history and economics at Emory and Henry College.

McConnell firmly believed in the quality education of women and giving the women students equal opportunity for an education.

The celebration will take place on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. on the main floor of McConnell Library.

Theodore N. Thomas, PhD, professor of humanities, history, and german along with Lindsay Kenderes, information resources librarian and college archivist, both from Milligan College will be there to speak on Dr. McConnell life.

There will be a performance by Bluegrass band Johnny Cake and the Lunch Truck. There will be refreshments and a cake-cutting to celebrate his birthday.
